(2000) UWA Excellence in Teaching Award for Postgraduate Supervision.
(1992) Inaugural winner of the Chandler Award for Achievement in the Field of Science Fiction and Fantasy.

He previously won the Australian Science Fiction Achievement Award, the Ditmar Award, and has twice won the William Atheling Award for Science Fiction Criticism.

Reviewer of sf/fantasy/horror for The Sydney Morning Herold since 1984 and since 1976 a compiler of the Annual Bibliography of Australian Literature published in The Journal of Commonwealth Literature.

Editor of the journal Science Fiction: A Review of Speculative Literature, which he has published since 1977.

Short stories have appeared in Envisaged Worlds, Omega Science Digest, Other Worlds, Alien Worlds, The West Australian, and other sf/fantasy literary competitions.
